COLONIAL HEIGHTS MEDIA RELEASES
NATIONAL TRAILS DAY - SATURDAY JUNE 7, 2008

Lewis L. Johnson, Chairman of The City of Colonial Heights Appomattox River Trails System (C.H.A.R.T.S.) announced today that the committee will be conducting a volunteer work day on Saturday June 7th from 8:30 A.M. to noon.  He indicated that this effort is intended to begin the process of implementing the Appomattox River Greenway Trail project in Colonial Heights, starting at the northern trail head at Roslyn Landing Park, which is located behind the city’s animal shelter off of Charles Dimmock Parkway.

It is only appropriate that on National Trails Day we begin the trail project here in Colonial Heights.  The committee has been working for the last several years to develop a plan and implementation program for this special project. The final design is almost completed and is now being reviewed by regulatory agencies prior to grant approvals.

Any one interested in working on the project can call 804 520-9275 for more information.

What is National Trails Day® and Why Celebrate NTD?
National Trails Day® is a celebration of trails that evolved from the report of President Ronald Reagan's President's Commission on Americans Outdoors. In 1987, the report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes, be on trails that wind through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing steps. The recommendation, dubbed Trails for All Americans, became the impetus behind several public and private parties joining American Hiking Society in launching National Trails Day® in 1993.

Trails do not just appear for our enjoyment, it takes many hours of planning, labor, and negotiating to develop them. National Trails Day®, the only nationwide celebration of trails, brings awareness to trails and thanks many people and partners for their support and hard work, including volunteers, land agencies, and outdoor minded businesses. It is also a day to introduce people to the many joys and benefits of trails.

Why Celebrate Trails?
America's 200,000 miles of trails allow us access to the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, solitude, inspiration, and much more. Trails take us to good physical and mental health by providing us with a chance to breathe fresh air, get our hearts pumping, and escape from our stresses.

The Outdoor Industry Association's annual Outdoor Recreation Participation Study for the United States 2006 reports that 72.1% of all Americans 16 and older (or 162 million people) participate in at least one of the 22 outdoor activities they track, which include: 76.7 million hiking; 13.5 million backpacking; 40.4 million trail running; and 10 million cross country skiing.

How do Trails Make You Healthy?
Trails give you the opportunity to get your heart pumping, lungs expanding, and muscles working at various levels of difficulty; improving your physical as well as mental well-being. With obesity rates skyrocketing, exercise is increasingly important, and trails provide a wide variety of opportunities for being physically active.

How Successful is National Trails Day®?
Since 1993, National Trails Day® has grown to inspire many thousands of people to enjoy trails on the same day nationwide. All 50 states have had events, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada, Guam and the Virgin Islands. National Trails Day® is now a permanent fixture on the calendars of trail clubs, businesses, and government agencies. With more than 1,100 registered events in 2007, greater awareness of trails was brought to thousands of people through dedications, hikes, bike and horse rides, paddle trips, trail maintenance, and many other activities. Event hosts
included local hiking clubs, federal agencies, municipal parks, retailers, land trusts, and many other businesses and organizations.

Who are the Leaders of National Trails Day®?
National Trails Day® 2007 was made possible thanks to the volunteer efforts of American Hiking Society's individual and Alliance members as well as by the generous support of our Lead Sponsor - Nature Valley, Partners - Merrell, REI and Thorlo, Friends - Adventure Medical Kits, Eastern Mountain Sports, and Royal Robbins, and Media Sponsors - Backpacker magazine and American Park Network, as well as our Federal Agency Partners - Bureau of Land Management, Federal Highway Administration, National Park Service, USDA Forest Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

CITY OF COLONIAL HEIGHTS SELECTS EILEEN D. DRAKE AS THE 2007 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

Media Release Date:  February 12, 2008

Mayor John T. Wood and Members of Colonial Heights City Council selected Eileen D. Drake, Recreation Specialist, in the Department of Recreation and Parks, as the 2007 Employee of the Year.  Ms. Drake originally began her employment with the City in July of 1996 as a Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor in the Office on Youth.  She transferred to the Senior Center in the Department of Recreation and Parks in January of 2006.

Mayor John T. Wood was quoted during the ceremony:  “Eileen has been a great asset to the City over her nearly 12 years of service.  Eileen always has a very upbeat personality and a smile on her face.  She has done an excellent job in developing fitness and wellness programs at the Senior Center.  She has worked independently to create these programs from scratch to fit the needs of our senior citizens.  Over the past two years, she has done her part to improve the lives of many City residents.  That is what public service is all about – improving the lives of our citizens.”

The Mayor continued:  “When Eileen was nominated to be an Employee of the Month in October, her Senior Center activities were certainly the cornerstone of the nomination.  Last Summer, Eileen also worked with Staff in the Office on Youth developing a Summer Program for teens.  The program was called High Octane Teens (HOT) and the activities included exercise, trips, fishing and painting classes.”

“Eileen also worked very hard with the Colonial Heights Sheriff’s Office and the Police Department to bring TRIAD to the senior citizens of the City.   This year’s TRIAD topics included Identity Theft/Fraud & Scams and a Public Safety Fair held at the Colonial Heights Community Building.  Ms. Drake makes a difference every day in the lives of our senior citizens and continues to show her dedication to the Recreation & Parks Department, the City staff organization and to everyone she comes in contact with.”

“Most importantly, Eileen Drake was chosen as Employee of the Year because she “re-invented” herself as a public servant.  Her efforts with our youth were certainly notable during her service with the Office on Youth.  However, she transferred to the opposite end of the age spectrum, re-inventing her approach and re-energizing her enthusiasm for helping people.  She has been very successful in her job with all of her customers.”

“On behalf of City Council, the City Manager and all of the City Employees, I congratulate Eileen D. Drake on her accomplishments and on the honor of being the 2007 Employee of the Year.”  The Employee of the Year banquet was held on Monday, February 11, 2008 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Colonial Heights.  Ms. Drake can be contacted daily at the Colonial Heights Senior Center at 157 Roanoke Avenue, telephone:  520-9220.  City Manager Richard A. Anzolut is also available for further comment at 520-9265.

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT) TRAINING

Media Release Date:  January 17, 2008

Each year a number of communities fall victim to hurricane, nor'easter, tornado, ice/snow storm, flood or technological hazard. The damage caused by disasters such as these affects all elements of society and government. This can severely restrict and overwhelm emergency response, resources, communications, utilities, and transportation systems leaving many individuals and neighborhoods cut off from outside support. What do you do when it happens to you or to your neighborhood? Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) helps communities mitigate disasters during the first 72 hours. The purpose of CERT training is to provide private citizens with the basic skills that they will need to handle virtually all of their own needs and then to respond to their communities needs in the aftermath of a disaster. CERT program is designed to be practical, interesting, and fun. While the program is interactive, there are no special physical requirements to participate in the program. Everyone is welcome to participate. CERT is sponsored by the City of Colonial Heights Fire, EMS, and Emergency Management. Currently a new class is forming and is scheduled to start in early March 2008.  For more information or to sign up, please contact Deputy Fire Chief Ed Snyder at 804-520-9361 or at snydere@colonial-heights.com.

BUILDING FIRE

Media Release Date:  September 25, 2007

Colonial Heights Fire and EMS along with Chesterfield Rescue 12 were dispatched to the 3400 Block of the Boulevard for a reported commercial building fire.  When units arrived, they had a one-story wood frame small specialty shop with fire showing out the front picture window.  The business, Kreative Expressions, sold general decorative supplies and rare items.  Attached to the business was Check-N-Go and Chanello’s Pizza.  Both received some damage and had to be closed.  Two vehicles in the parking lot, parked near the building, were also damaged by fire.  It took the fire department about an hour to mark the fire under control.  Kreative Expressions received major fire damage and it is estimated that a majority of it’s products were destroyed.  No one was injured.  Units from Ft Lee and Petersburg responded to the scene to assist.  The Red Cross responded with drinks and food to the firefighters during the warm weather.  An investigation revealed that a candle left unattended and burning on combustibles possible caused the fire.  Estimated damages are unknown at this time because of the building damage, businesses damaged, contents, vehicles, and loss of business.  All businesses and the property owner had insurance.
