Project Overview

Improvements to the Boulevard (U.S. Route 1) are in in preparation. In June 2009, the City initiated preliminary engineering efforts to improve the Boulevard between Lafayette Avenue and Westover Avenue. The goal of this project is to improve this section of the Boulevard not only for driving, but also for shopping, walking and cycling. Modernization of the Boulevard could include such improvements as:

    • Additional turn lanes
    • Landscaping and lighting
    • Sidewalks and cross walks
    • Bicycle lanes
    • Improved business access
    • Storm drain system improvements

All proposed improvements will adhere to the “Boulevard Design Guidelines” previously adopted by the City.

Engineering consultants assisting the City are currently gathering information along the corridor and conducting a variety of field studies. Public collaboration and input and during this time is very important. In late summer/early fall 2009, the City will conduct a Citizen Information Meeting (CIM) to present a preliminary concept and answer questions. Comments and input collected and design efforts will continue through the remainder of the year. The public will be able to provide input again at a formal Public Hearing anticipated in early 2010.

Construction is estimated to begin in summer 2011.
