Colonel Jeffrey W. Faries,
Chief of Police,
has been with the Colonial Heights Police
Department
since August 23,
1989, when he
started his
20+-year career as a patrol officer. By July, 1991,
he was assigned to the Investigations Division as a
detective and became a Detective Sergeant on January
11, 1995. The following year, he was assigned as
Patrol Sergeant, where he was in a supervisory
position for nearly five years, until he was again
promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on February 21,
2001. He was the Commander of the Investigations
Division when, due to his exceptional leadership
skills, a promotion to the position of Captain found
him in charge of the Patrol Division in August,
2005. After the departure of Chief Richard L.
Schurman in January, 2006, Captain Faries assumed
the role of Acting Chief of Police. In August,
2006, after an intensive eight-month search and a
review of 78 applicants from across the country,
then Acting Police Chief Jeff Faries was chosen as
the City’s new Chief of
Police.
Colonel Faries
has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology and is
currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public
Administration from Virginia Tech. He is also a
graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy 212th
Session, and is currently a fellow with the Sorenson
Institute for Political Leadership through the
University of Virginia. During his illustrious
career, he has received several distinguished awards
for service to our community, including Officer
of the Year (1992), Medal of Valor (1994) and
was two-time recipient of the M.A.D.D. Award
(1997 and 1998). In 2009, through the leadership of
Chief Faries, the department was awarded the
Virginia Municipal League’s Risk Management
Excellence Award.
Among his many
work-related memberships, the Chief is the past
chairman of the Central Virginia Regional Narcotics
Task Force, and serves his community as a member of
the Kiwanis Club and Chamber of Commerce. He
maintains memberships in such prestigious
professional organizations as the FBI National
Academy Association; IACP (International Association
of Chiefs of Police); the Juvenile and Domestic
Violence Task Force; the Chesterfield/Colonial
Heights Sexual Abuse Task Force; the Youth Services
Commission; the Transportation Safety Commission;
the Juvenile Administrators Concerned for Kids
Committee; and the Chesterfield/Colonial Heights
Community Criminal Justice Board. Chief Faries’
membership in the Virginia Association of Chiefs of
Police (VACP) finds him currently sitting on two
boards—the Highway Safety Committee and the Witness
Protection Board. Most recently, Chief Faries
graduated from the IACP’s National Law
Enforcement Leadership Institute on Violence against
Women (2009), as well as the IACP’s Center for
Police Leadership in the area of Leadership in
Police Organizations (2008).
Chief Faries’
commitment to his community is evidenced by his
regular participation in such events as the Annual
Colonial Heights City Clean-up Day and the Annual
Special Olympics events, such as Cops and
Lobsters and the Torch Run. He is a
great supporter of the City school system and
attends many high school sporting events as he
cheers on the mighty Colonials. Jeff resides
in Colonial Heights with his wife, Trinia, and
daughters Michelle and Madison.
